LETTER FROM THE VICAR, THE REVEREND RICHARD HARRISON
Return to the top and the index
Dear Friends,
“Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace good will toward men”. The angelic message to the Shepherds is surely the best New Year’s Greeting for The Link from your Vicar. We need to remind ourselves that our faith is based on peace and reconciliation - between God and Man and so amongst men too - for Christ was a man of peace who brought that peace and reconciliation to the world by his birth, life, teaching, suffering, death and resurrection.
In my preparations for the Advent and Christmas services I found these wonderful prayers which can be used at the lighting of the four Advent Candles - prayers which remind us that our faith is based on Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.
We light the candle of hope to remind us of the promises made by all the prophets that God would raise up a saviour for his people Israel. Christ is our hope and our salvation. He calls us to share our hope in him with each other.
We light the candle of peace to remind us that it is only with God and by following in his path that true peace can be found. Christ brings the peace of God to us. He calls us to share the peace he gives with each other.
We light the candle of joy to remind us that God gives joy to every heart that abides in him. As Mary rejoiced in the birth of Jesus - so his birth in us brings us joy. God calls us to share the joy he gives with each other.
We light the candle of love to remind us that Jesus is God's gift of love to us - and that in him, the light of love triumphs over darkness. Love never fails - it transforms all those who give it and receive it. God calls us to share his love with each other.
Our Faith, our Church and so the the life of our Benefice will thrive if we can show that we are a people of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love - for ultimately people will only be drawn to our churches by the faith that they will find there - for they should be coming to Church seeking a relationship with God in Jesus that offers those precious gifts. So - although it is good that we should arrange special services, like the Advent Services for the Benefice at Broadwell which went so well, and although we should do all that we can to draw people to Church - above all we must make sure thay find there evidence of the living relationship with God that transforms lives and communities. Perhaps that is our real challenge for 2003 - to make sure that our faith and the faith that we proclaim in our churches is one that is seen to make a difference in our own lives and in our communities.
You might be forgiven for thinking that in my first eight months here I have been over concerned with structures, although as you know I have also made great efforts to get to know the people here - the basis of any pastoral ministry. Getting to know people has been a wonderful experience and one that will continue - dealing with structures is more difficult and yet I do believe that it is very important in establishing a way in which we can show that our faith does ‘make a difference’.
I hope that at the next Churchwardens’ meeting on February 5th we can agree to our new pattern of services (with a Benefice Service every month) and to a single magazine and a single Council - and then from this will flow new initiatives in our worship (with the new Choir - thank you many people, but especially Wanda!), but also in work with young people and in pastoral care, in involvement in the community, and maybe even in our struggle to meet the financial demands made on us all to be the people of God in these twelve churches and eleven parishes.
As you may know it is usually the custom for parish priests not to send Christmas Cards to their parishioners, although I fear I have made exceptions, when I have had to write a particular note of thanks or concern on a particular occasion. However, do please accept grateful thanks for the cards that all the clergy of the Benefice have received - and I know that I can speak for my colleagues here too - it is very heartening to receive your messages of goodwill at this Holy Season.
In a normal week I try to begin each day (or at least Monday to Thursday) with Morning Prayer at 8.30 am in Shilton, which all are welcome to join. The reading set for this morning included this passage from the first chapter of the Second Letter of Peter. Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Your brother in Christ,
Richard.

Filkins & Broughton W.I. Our Christmas Party was a thoroughly enjoyable evening - warm friendly company, loosening up under the influence of Lesley White’s mulled wine, then came a splendid supper. Ann Spiers and Pat Clark were responsible for the chicken, and Lesley cooked all the roasties and vegetables. Desserts were original - jellies bulging with fruit and beautifully colour-schemed (Helen Squire’s and Elizabeth Gidman’s contribution) and there were mincepies and cream. A few minutes for us to recover, while Pam Assiter and the Courtley Dansers showed us ‘Hunt the Squirrel’ - then it was our turn to join in - both that dance and ‘Jack’s Maggot’ (our favourite) and ‘Epping Forest’. It was great fun and Pam said that we acquitted ourselves well! The finale was a farandole during which three of our members managed to tie themselves in a painful-looking knot - refusing to drop hands! Janet Young, the President, thanked all the helpers and Pat Clark for supplying the pleasant background music. Elizabeth was presented with a bottle of wine in appreciation of her hosting of the Committee meetings, and since it was Helen’s birthday, she was given one as well! The evening was rounded off with Auld Lang Syne.
There will be a Scrabble evening with Ann Cripps on Monday 6th January, and at the next meeting on 15th January, Anne Griffiths will be “Bonding, Burning and Dissolving to Stitch”.

THE NEWS FROM ST CHRISTOPHER’S SCHOOL, LANGFORD
Return to the top and the index
The new classroom is on schedule - the painters are in and the carpets will be fitted after the holidays. Mr Wilk’s office is full of new furniture all ready to move into the classroom. The staff are having a training day in school on Tuesday 7th January, when they will be helping to equip the new classroom. The other internal change is that at last the area outside the office has been turned into a reception area for visitors - gone are the sports equipment and other assorted items that used to clutter it up - ‘Put away’ I’m told, ‘Never to be found again’, I ask?
We would like to welcome Miss Katherine Pheby to our teaching team. Miss Pheby is a maths specialist with a BA Honours degree. She joins us in January, having been away round the world since graduating. She will be taking our year 2 children - those who will be sitting their their SAT’s tests this year - and has been appointed for the next two terms. Miss Melanie Doyle will have the Reception and year 1 children
Another newcomer to the school is a new kitchen stove for Mrs Cross. The old stove was supposed to have been replaced many years ago, so she has been struggling on with a stove that will be remembered by many previous cooks at the school. The new one has been fitted in the two days before the day of our Christmas lunch - good luck Mrs Cross, cooking that on a new cooker!
Stories of our activities - the nativity in the Church and school by Class ! and 2 was excellent. We do not normally single out any child, but this year is an exception - Charley Brown, as a king, stole the show, his acting and his appearance; Father Richard decided that he looked like the pope! The Christmas performance by Class 3 & 4, which was held in the School, was also excellent and our thanks go to Mrs Henderson, our music teacher for all the work that she puts into all our performances. The whole school has been able to go and see Dick Whittington at The Wyvern Theatre in Swindon, which was a wonderful outing. Father Christmas also paid his usual visit to the School on party day.
The Christmas Bingo raised the wonderful sum of £119 - Thenk you to Christine Tinson and Sara Reynolds for organising the evening.
The official opening of 0ur new classroom will take place on Monday January 20th at 6.30pm, when Bishop Colin Fletcher will come to bless the building. Imvitations will be sent to parents and friends at the start of the new term.
